When I think of Rebirth, I think of Spring, with flowers coming back to bloom in the garden and birds migrating back from their winter homes. So I created a young goddess just waking up from her Winter slumber, the blush coming back into her cheeks. Flowers all around her are bursting with color, and the swallows have built a nest in her hair for the hatching eggs. Cherry blossoms have traditionally symbolized rebirth in Japanese culture, and I wanted to expand on the Asian motif with flowers traditionally used in Asian paintings - peonies, magnolia, and chrysanthemums. Because for me this painting also symbolizes the rebirth of my love for my Asian identity and Asians finding the power of using their voice in the world today.
