When I started this piece I got to think about the symbols of rebirth in different cultures and of course the most well known is water. Water is not only used as a representative of spiritual rebirth, but also to represent mental rebirth, the process of cleansing and healing. We all know the power and importance of this concepts during the last year, how we learned to connect with them in our own ways.
The second symbol used in the illustration is the water lily, which is also well known in different cultures as a symbol of rebirth in many levels. The root word for this plant is Nymphea, and it can be translated as ‘’nymph’’, which is a Greek word that means a feminine soul that had lived in nature, and she was found in rivers, wells, and even lakes. Because they can grow in dirty soil or mud and they become a filter purifying the water they float in, they can transform every pond into a colorful Monet paradise. Their uniqueness lay also in the way they grow: the flower goes under the water and then transforms itself into a fruit while being submerged. After the seeds develop and reach their size fully, they will float back to the top and spread all over the pond. Water lilies are one of the most beautiful flowers in the world, not only because of their appearance but because of what they represent.
The final element I used to represent rebirth is the style of the illustration itself. If you know my style or if you have visited my page, you can easily see how different this piece is. I feel comfortable with a minimalist style, where colors are left more to the imagination than to the eye. But in here, rebirth makes me think of an explosion of colors, where shadows and light are created by color contrast. The Nymph in my illustration is coming out of the dark water and breathing freely in the colourful world is my version of rebirth nowadays.
